WASHINGTON, July 25 1988— Federal
regulators
have expanded their investigation of unintended
acceleration in
Mercedes-Benz automobiles to include 309,000 vehicles
made from 1984
through 1988, the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration said
today. The agency said it had received allegations of
301 instances of
unintended acceleration in cars equipped with gasoline
engines and
automatic transmissions. Of those cases, 217 involved
accidents in
which 92 people were injured and one person killed.
